As a conscious being, connecting with your intuition deepens your life experience. Many people ask, “Why do some of us seem to have better intuition than others?” The truth is, not everyone is listening. If you desire to increase your intuitive connection, all it takes is a little time and intention to cultivate your awareness. Perhaps you even believe that you lack intuition altogether, but it’s there, just waiting to be tuned in. Your mind is constantly giving you feedback. Sometimes, we must sit with ourselves long enough to discover whether 1) you’re not receiving the message or 2) you’re misinterpreting the signs. When you’re uncertain about how to proceed, your intuition can provide valuable feedback. We have conditioned ourselves to using primarily the logical mind for efficiency. However, we also have other tools at our disposal. Give your intuition a chance. Remember, it’s a process of attentive and patient communication. It’s already there, waiting for you to tap in.
Cultivate & Use Your Intuition
Learn to cultivate and use your intuition as part of your everyday meditation or mindfulness practice. More than the voice in your head, intuition is a visceral knowing. A feeling or inclination from deep within. To work with it, we must first get calm. Settle in and explore the world that exists within.
-
Practice addressing and listening to your intuition.
- You probably already do this to some degree but it is helpful to notice the difference between your logical mind, your preferences, and intuition. When faced with multiple possibilities, give your intuition a chance to chime in. Start with little things. “Should I go to the movie with Sally or stay at home?” Ask yourself these types of questions as they come up in your life and notice the response you receive.
-
Notice how your intuition communicates with you.
- It might be in the form of a verbal response. In many cases, you’ll get a feeling in your body that might take the form of a sensation in your stomach, chest, or head. Intuition can reveal itself as a sense of calmness, knowing, or anxiety. You are already familiar with these feelings. Think of an experience when you just knew that something was “right” and it turned out to be so.
-
Follow your intuition blindly in trivial matters.
- Show your intuition that you’re willing to listen. Activate it with an intentional invitation. Practice letting it lead you whenever you can. For example, when faced with non-pressing matters, such as whether to have a cup of coffee or tea, just do what your intuition tells you. You might go for a joy ride and allow your intuition to choose all the turns. Pay attention to where you end up! Intuition increases synchronicity.
-
Meditation helps.
- Your intuition might be talking to you, but you’re not getting the message. With everything else going on in your head, you might not even notice that your intuition is trying to communicate with you. In response to that reality, create space for your intuition to develop. Think of intuition the same way that you would a muscle that you need to develop. You would provide it with nourishment and opportunity, yes? Well, meditation can quiet the mind enough to notice what your intuition is saying and give it space to practice doing so.
-
Spend time in a new environment.
- We are conditioned to our daily lives.Thoughts and feelings become habits that are partially dependent on your surroundings. For instance, You tend to think and feel a certain way at home. The same goes for work. Because of this, it is helpful to spend time in new environments. Give your intuition room to maneuver by spending time someplace out of the ordinary for you. Time at the library, park, or coffee shop might open the lines of communication, connecting, and synchronicity.
-
Do something that engages your mind at a low level.
- Have you ever noticed that many of your best ideas come while taking a shower, driving down the highway, or mowing the grass? It’s because your mind is partially occupied. AHA moments are rarely experienced when we’re seeking them out. When strengthening your intuition, the process is much like that. You’ll want to pay attention to what you’re doing, but to also allow your mind to wander a bit. See what comes up. Walking meditations, yoga practice and even coloring can be great choices here. Whatever you choose, I suggest that the activity is physically methodical in some way.
-
Keep track of your results.
- As part of your routine, notice what you are receiving. Lean into your awareness of the situations where the results are positive and those that are negative. In time, you’ll be able to trust your intuition in more areas of your life and the results will likely increase. It’s important to understand that your intuition is flawed, but only by your fears and misconceptions. Sometimes, intuition leads us to places where things just don’t work out…and maybe that’s exactly what we needed to happen, even if it isn’t what we consciously preferred. Consider, what happened after that? Because of that? What did that teach you? Process What You Notice When You Practice
Have Fun With It
Intuition is connected to our physical, mental, spiritual, and metaphysical experiences, and you already have a lot of life experience. Sometimes, we get in our own way when we aren’t taking the time that it takes to release what is no longer serving us. If you think that this may be a roadblock for you, try 1) Dissolving outdated thoughts and emotions. 2) Invite balanced living into your life. And 3) release your attachment to the outcomes here. Intuition is a skill best served synergistically in a balanced mind-body and environment. It uses information from all layers of your health to access its own ability to thrive and function. Your intuition will guide you – if you’ll listen and allow it.
Be well.
