Discovering Self-Care

Discovering Self-Care this week had me trying something different : Test driving  My Teen’s Beauty Routine vs. My Yogic Approach. Self-care is a deeply personal journey, and what works for one person might not resonate with another. Recently, I decided to try out my teenager’s self-care routine, which she swears by for making her feel fantastic. While I learned a lot from her suggestions, I also discovered why her routine wouldn’t work for me. Here’s a breakdown of her recommendations and my insights, followed by my own approach to self-care that aligns with my yogic lifestyle.

Phase 1: Hygiene & Makeup

  • Everything Shower: My teen starts her routine with an “everything shower,” a comprehensive cleansing ritual that includes exfoliating, shaving, and moisturizing.
  • Glam Routine: Post-shower, she follows a detailed makeup routine designed to enhance her natural beauty. This includes foundation, contouring, eyeshadow, and more.

Phase 2: Hair Care

  • Hair Maintenance: She spends a good amount of time washing, conditioning, and styling her hair. This often involves using various hair products to achieve the perfect look.

ANNNND Phase 3: Fashion Sense

  • Style Your Outfit: She carefully selects an outfit that expresses her personality and mood for the day.
  • Accessorize & Fit Check: Accessories are chosen to complement her outfit, and a final fit check ensures everything looks perfect.

My Insights from Trying Her Routine

While this routine makes my teenager feel fantastic, I quickly realized that it wouldn’t work for me. Here’s why:

  • Time-Consuming: Her routine is quite time-consuming, and as someone who values efficiency, I found it challenging to dedicate so much time to self-preening.
  • Different Priorities: My priorities are different. While my teen enjoys the process of beautifying herself, I find greater satisfaction in activities that nourish my soul and body, such as yoga and spending time in nature.

Self-Care – My Way

Instead of lengthy beauty routines, my self-care involves activities that align with my values of simplicity, mindfulness, and physical well-being.

Movement and Yoga

Engaging in simple daily yoga moves is a cornerstone of my self-care routine. Yoga helps me stay connected to my body, mind, and breath, promoting physical health and mental clarity.

Intentional Living

I strive to be intentional in my actions, focusing on living mindfully. This includes setting aside time for meditation, practicing gratitude, and being present in each moment.

Nourishment

Nourishing my body with healthy foods and staying hydrated is essential. I also ensure that I nourish my mind by reading, learning new things, and engaging in creative activities.

Connection

Building and maintaining connections with loved ones and my community is a key aspect of my self-care. Whether it’s spending time with family, friends, or my furry companions, these connections provide emotional support and joy.

Embrace the Outdoors

There’s nothing like the combination of sweat, sunshine, and dirt to make me feel rejuvenated. Gardening, hiking, or simply walking in nature helps me stay grounded and connected to the earth.

Organization

Keeping my space organized and clutter-free helps me maintain a clear mind. I dedicate time to tidy up my surroundings, which in turn, brings a sense of calm and order to my life.

At The End of The Day

While I’m a big fan of testing out new things, suffice it to say that my teen can keep her lengthy preening while I go out and nourish my soul with some good old-fashioned sweat, sunshine, and dirt. Everyone’s self-care journey is unique, and it’s important to find what works best for you. For me, that means embracing a simpler, more mindful approach that aligns with my yogic values.

Remember, self-care is about doing what makes you feel great. Whether it’s a detailed beauty routine or a meditative yoga session, the key is to find joy and fulfillment in your practices. 🧘‍♀️🫶

Namaste.
