Express Yourself

Whatever it takes, find the courage and conviction to express yourself. You don’t always have to be right; you only have to let it flow. To honor, express, and reign in our emotional expressions, we need to fully accept where they come from, what they mean for us, and how we can communicate them without impulsive reactivity. The heart and the head work in tandem, but from very different settings. Set aside time, in a safe space, to let your emotions in completely.

Communication Takes Practice

  1. Practice surrender. Reflect on the Lady in the mirror with non-judgment. Observe the source, texture, and influence of her feelings over everything that she does. When we stay too busy to address these feelings, we act hastily because their background noise keeps our brains from thinking functionally. Denial blocks our flow. The better you get at it, the easier it becomes to connect with yourself, and others.
  2.  The capacity to acknowledge, interpret, and process your interior emotional life is a skill. Build yourself up thru regular intervals. From a space of emotional intelligence, we gain insight into the inner workings of our being. We know that we make choices in light of personal truths. Thus, from observing our emotional flow, we tap back into the self-acceptance that grounds us.
  3. Emotions don’t always make sense. They don’t have to. The purpose of letting them flow over you is to increase your ability to cope, change, and cultivate your grip on your inner life. Informed self-acceptance, expression, and coping are crafts that lead to improved connections.

Look for areas of neutrality. Let it be as it is. Routinely, it’s our obsessive preoccupation with an invisible game of tug of war that keeps us from communicating effectively in our external lives. By setting aside this time to accept and monitor our emotional flow, we can turn down the volume of its chatter. Today, look for the distinctive separation between your abilities to feel whole and still make informed decisions, free of all that conflicting emotion. As we navigate life in a nonreactive flow, we better communicate for ourselves with others.

“Following your feelings will lead you to their source. Only through emotions can you encounter the force field of your own soul.”
