Enlightenment has a lot to offer. But how does one become more enlightened? Well, they intentional practice walking the path. In a way, becoming enlightened is challenging in the same way eating only one potato chip is challenging. AKA, it’s totally doable but not without a little effort. Try these strategies on your journey to enlightenment:
-
Meditation
- Using some type of meditation in your daily practice is the primary tool to reach enlightenment.
- Buy a book or join a local group to learn how to meditate. Meditation isn’t complicated, but it is best done with regularity in order to get the most out of it.
-
Pay attention.
- Notice your thoughts and feelings as they arise. If you’re sitting in traffic, annoyed that you’re going to be late for work, notice the feelings and consider the origin.
- What are you feeling? Why? Are your feelings helping in any way?
- Have you always responded this way in similar situations? Would a child respond the same way?
- Awareness is the most accessible tool we have if we can learn to bring it into each moment with us.
-
Play the role of the observer.
- It’s not enough to pay attention. So, once you’ve grown more mindful, take that awareness a step further.
- Strive to be objective and non-judgmental in your observations.
- Imagine you’re a stranger observing the situation with nothing to gain or lose.
- Notice the rise and fall of your emotions without getting involved. Be a scientist.
-
Be patient.
- Becoming enlightened is like training for the Olympics. It can take years, and even lifetimes, to develop the conditioning and eventual expertise.
- Enjoy the fact that you’re making small amounts of progress each day. It takes time.
-
Let go of the past.
- Growing into an acceptance of negative experiences from the past is part of the journey. When can’t let go of things that we are still clinging to.
- Perhaps most of our time spent on the path is spent here. Remember, teachers, counselors, mentors, and others available to help you, if you let them.
- Journaling is another great tool for dissolving all the clutter from the past and helping you step into yourself as you are now, and letting go of what no longer serves you.
- Take your time. Let the past go in the waves and paces that you are comfortable with.
- Enjoy the freedom of feeling your load as it is lightened.
“Enlightenment is the experience -the feeling- of Oneness of All Life, more than the putting on of wisdom.”
– Mark Nepo
