#1 Lesson: Self Care 101 accepts that Self-Care IS NOT SELFISH. It’s OKAY to take care of yourself first! In fact, it’s preferred. Addiction is complicated, but recovery is simple, soulful, and satisfying. We have to take a serious look at our personal needs (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually) and include a plan for ensuring that our personal needs get met, especially without backsliding toward the chemical assistance of drugs and alcohol. We are learning that we can no longer vacillate back and forth between extremes, but that we must instead infuse our lives with balance…starting with the self.
Selfish Versus Selfless
Remember if you are not okay – you are not okay to take care of anyone else. Recovery is about grounding you in the reality that YOU ARE HUMAN and you have limits. Self-care is a cornerstone of recovery because it makes it possible to not use NO MATTER WHAT!
Self Awareness Activity:
Impulse control can be developed through repeated cognitive intervention:
1. Identify a specific impulsive behavior that you want to change (interrupting, yelling, eye-rolling,etc.)
2. Monitor self, with assistance from others, for the manifestation of that specific behavior.
3. Allow peers to consistently point out when that behavior is occurring.
4. Consistently practice utilizing replacement behaviors.
5. Give yourself a pat on the back for changing one little thing that will help you move mountains!
SKILL OF THE WEEK: TLC
Know what you need. Whether it is a massage once a month, yoga once a week, a meeting once a day or an Hour of peace & quiet to gather your thoughts. Know what you need…AND MAKE IT HAPPEN! So many pieces fit together to make your life whole. Feel good about taking care of the self-care piece because it is just as important to the whole as the other pieces are. Neglecting yourself, for whatever reason, is like building a puzzle with no centerpiece.
PRIORITIES often make us think and feel like “we can’t do that” but let’s face it; if it’s a priority we find a way. Utilize your resourcefulness to find a way to build yourself up, consistently, from the inside out, because YOU DESERVE IT! At the end of the day, Self Care 101 = It’s time to get serious about being self-aware, and nurturing ourselves with self-care.
